EAST LANSING, MI — This semester, 26 students enrolled in Assistant Professor Louise Siddons’s Curatorial Practices: History of Prints course, part of MSU’s Museum Studies Program, got a peek behind the scenes and into the collections of the Kresge Art Museum. Siddons, who also serves as an Adjunct Curator at KAM, helped to guide the students through a collaborative process that ultimately culminated in the exhibition From Rags to Riches: The Globalization of Fashion through Print Culture.

This exhibition will be on view in KAM’s Works on Paper Gallery November 18 through December 12, 2008. An opening reception for the exhibition will be held on Thursday, November 20, 5-7 p.m., with a talk by the class’s education committee at 6 p.m. This reception is free of charge, and the public is encouraged to attend.

Split into several groups, students in Siddons’s Curatorial Practices class brainstormed themes for an exhibition of works on paper. No specific restrictions were given, but there were still challenges in this collaborative project. Students had to consider the limitations of the print collection as well as find a theme with the relevance to appeal to both the museum audience and students on campus. From Rags to Riches: The Globalization of Fashion through Print Culture won the consensus of the class. Students felt that following fashion trends represented through the print medium would speak to the effects of globalization that are felt daily on the MSU campus.

MSU’s studio art faculty make significant contributions to the arts, regularly exhibiting in venues from New York City to South Korea. Collectively they have received recognition and support from Fulbright, National Endowment for the Arts, and the Pollack Krasner Foundation. Representing a broad-range of media and contemporary art approaches, the exhibition highlights the faculty’s dedication to actively pursuing creative research. The public is invited to join the artists for an opening reception on Friday, November 7 from 7:00–9:00 p.m.

In conjunction with the Studio Art Faculty Biennial, faculty members teaching Art History & Visual Culture and Apparel & Textile Design will present their scholarly research in a series of lectures throughout the 2008-2009 academic year.

EAST LANSING, MI –– The Department of Art & Art History at Michigan State University is pleased to announce the next BFA EXHIBITION – What is Art?

The BFA solo exhibition is a major component of the BFA in Studio Art degree program. BFA candidates in the final year of study present their creative research to the public in a solo exhibition held in the Department of Art & Art History student galleries.

What is Art? features artwork by BFA student Ashley Strahm. Strahm’s exhibition features installation work that relates her personal experience with defining and validating her own work and invites the viewer to participate in defining art as well. The installation is representational of the artist’s struggle to validate her own work within the parameters of a collegic environment: being influenced by faculty, visiting artists, and art media. What is Art? You decide. This participatory installation is meant to promote discussion and let viewers’ definitions be a part of the work.

Ashley Strahm’s work will be on display in the Department of Art & Art History’s Gallery 114 in the Kresge Art Center beginning October 6 running until October 10. The public is invited to meet the artist at a closing reception on October 10.

Department of Art & Art History faculty member Ben Duke exhibits in Chicago at the Ann Nathan Gallery. The exhibition features current figure paintings by Duke and Sangram Majumdar. On view from February 15 through the end of March, the opening reception is scheduled for Friday, February 15 from 5-8 PM. Â

“Ben Duke’s paintings burst with the depth and vibrancy of his imagination. Duke mixes photographic sources and life images to create compositions that bend and skew in unpredictable perspectives. Cities float in the sky, and sea creatures swim in the open air—a surprise on every canvas. Never dull, always impulsive, Duke creates extraordinary visions with an energetic style.”Â
